CHAD NELSON

I’ve been playing guitar and bass for nearly 17 years. While having only 4 lessons on the guitar, I don’t read music, and I play solely by ear. Other instruments that I’ve picked up over the years include the drums and piano, as well as starting my journey into the art of audio recording back in 2002.

I’ve played in a few bands over the years that have played a little of everything, including country, blues, and rock music, as well as old gospel and praise and worship music occasionally in church. I was raised on country and gospel music, and though I enjoy playing many different styles of music, blues and rock music are my absolute favorite styles of music to play, listen to, and write. As a songwriter, most of my songs have flavors of country, blues, and rock music all wrapped up into one. I love the story of a country song, the power and soul of a blues song, and the raging intensity of a rock song.

I’ve learned so much from listening to a wide array of artists, and some of my all time favorite artists and heroes include, but are not limited to, Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, Waylon Jennings, Bad Company, Merle Haggard, Government Mule, Buck Owens, The Allman Brothers, Glen Campbell, and many, many more.

The majority of my music career has been playing the local scene in North Dakota, though I did spend a year in Nashville, Tennessee from 2006 to 2007. I was the lead guitarist for the original pop-rock band Nothing Like The Sun, and I played for them for about 5 months. Our main goal was to be signed by a major label, though it didn’t happen. It was during my time with Nothing Like The Sun when I realized that I wasn’t really interested in being signed by a label only to be told what I can and cannot do, and I wasn’t really interested in playing somebody else’s music. I resigned from the band, and was back home in North Dakota within 6 months. Over the last 2 years, I’ve acquired good quality instruments and recording gear, and have set myself up to be a songwriter and producer. On any song of mine that you hear, I’m playing all acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitar, keyboards, and I sing all of the lead and harmony vocals. All of my drums and percussion are programmed into a rhythm machine. My production company is called Prairie Thunder Productions, and it’s still in the developmental stages as far as catering to customers, but it’s in the works and look for the website to come soon.

I met Tom Karpow while he was living in North Dakota from 2005 to 2006, and our great friendship started immediately. I am very honored and excited to be writing and recording the music for Upper One Studios, and I’m very excited to see what we create in the future.
