Born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, Rick began acting in High School and participated in such plays as, “The Front Page” and musicals such as “Oliver” and “Hello Dolly”. During his senior year at Bartlett High School, Rick was offered an acting and theater scholarship to the University of South Carolina, in Spartanburg. While attending school in Spartanburg, Rick starred in such productions as: “The Fantasticks” and “Wiley and the Hairy Man”. It was at Spartanburg where Rick learned theater history, set design and sound and lighting techniques for elaborate stage productions such as: “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.”


Rick obtained both a Bachelor’s of Science and a Master’s of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and Security and has used his degrees to become a writer and published author of three novels, Rick has combined his acting and writing talents to create several screenplays including: “Probation” The movie – “The Rabbit Hole” and the new sitcom “Halfway There”. Rick’s novels include: “Golden Valley”, “The Agent” and “Armistice” and he is currently at work on his next novel.

Rick Mallars and Thomas Karpow created Upper One Studios in 2008 in an effort to bring quality video productions to the world on a shoestring budget. Rick and Tom recently wrote, filmed, directed, produced and starred in the Probation and Parole Orientation Video for the Department of Corrections in Anchorage, Alaska. The video is now used in all probation offices across the state.

Late Night Alaska!

We are pleased to announce that a deal has been made with Bob Lester - the host of Alaska's number one radio show! Bob Lester has agreed to host the Upper One Studios production of Late Night Alaska. Mr. Lester brings over a decade of comedy and radio hosting experience to late night television and has proven time and time again that Alaskans can't help but listen in to hear him every morning to the tune of over 100,000 listeners both here in Alaska and the lower forty-eight.


Merger Announced

Upper One Studios is pleased to announce its merger with KACN Channel 1 and 95 on GCI Cable! Upper One Studios is moving its offices and equipment to the KACN station where Rick and Tom will be working with the station managers on brand new show concepts already in development.
